ブッシュ米大統領と、いま「米国の最大の敵」となったイスラム過激派指導者オサマ・ビンラディン氏の一家は、石油ビジネスでつながっていた。ブッシュ氏が70年代に石油・ガス採掘会社を設立したとき、オサマ氏の長兄サレム・ビンラディン氏が共同出資者になっていたのだ。
今回の同時多発テロを受け、英国と米国の大衆紙が24日付紙面で改めて報じた。
これまでの報道をまとめると、ブッシュ氏はハーバード大学経営大学院を卒業して3年後の78年に採掘会社「アルブスト・エネルギー」を設立、ここにサレム氏がブッシュ氏の友人を代理人にして約7万ドルを投資したようだ。
アルブスト社は何度か社名変更や買収を繰り返し、86年には共和党の資金提供者が経営するハーケン・エネルギー社の一部となった。ブッシュ氏は同社の株を入手すると同時に、年間12万ドル（後に5万ドルに減額）の顧問料を得ている。
この会社に翌年、サウジアラビアの銀行家が米国での代理人を通じて投資した。この銀行家は後に、オサマ・ビンラディン氏に近い組織に献金した容疑で、米司法当局の要請によりサウジ国内で身柄を拘束されているという。
サレム氏は「55人」（英デーリー・メール紙）ともいわれるオサマ氏の兄弟姉妹の最年長者らしい。サウジの裕福な事業家だった父の後を継ぐ形でビジネスの世界に進んだが、83年に米テキサス州で小型飛行機の事故で死んでいる。
オサマ氏は90年代に入り、勘当された形で家族から接触を絶たれている。
ブッシュ氏の父ブッシュ元大統領も石油事業で身をたてており、いわば「ファミリー・ビジネス」。サレム氏の代理人となったブッシュ氏の友人は10年ほど 前、「サウジの意向を米政府の政策に反映させようとしたのでは」との疑いで捜査の対象になっている。昨年の米大統領選の中でも、ブッシュ・ファミリーのこ うした疑惑が報じられていた。（朝日新聞 2001/09/25 | Photo Source: Bush Speaks）
